Abstract
Reinforcing steel is a nonrenewable mining product. In order to solve this problem, bamboo, which is cheap and has a fairly high tensile strength, could be used as an alternative. In this study, bamboo is used to reinforce concrete beam. The beams are designed under reinforced with no compression reinforcement. All beams are reinforced with 12 mm bamboo Galah protected with water resistant layer.A four-point load test set up is used to ensure pure bending. The test results show that the average value of first crack moment is 15.26 % bigger compared with the calculated moment. This indicates that there is a reasonable agreement between experimental and theoretical results. The standard deviation (35,31 %) indicates that the quality of bamboo used in this study is not uniform. It could be concluded that, there is a possibility to use bamboo to replace steel as reinforcement, particularly for simple concrete structures.
