Abstract

Background: Hypertension is still one of the leading health problems in the world. Hypertension itself is a condition that can actually be controlled and early detection can prevent complications. Hypertension along with dyslipidemia is known as one of the major risk factors of cardiovascular disease. Previous research has shown the coexistence of abnormality in lipid profile and hypertension in patients with coronary heart disease. Objective: To determine the correlation between serum lipid profile and blood pressure in hypertensive patients, and also its contribution to blood pressure. Method: This study was a cross sectional study. The subjects were 41 hypertensive patients of Cardiology clinic at NTB general hospital. Data was obtained through blood pressure test and laboratory examination. The data was then analyzed using Spearman correlation test and linear regression with SPSS 16 for windows. Result: There is a significant correlation between systolic blood pressure with total cholesterol (p = 0.009, r = 0.401) and diastolic blood pressure with triglycerides (p = 0.003, r = 0.457). The correlation between systolic and diastolic blood pressure with the other variables were not statistically significant. Multivariate analysis showed relationship between total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol to the systolic blood pressure with adjusted R square of 11.9%. Conclusion: There is a significant correlation between total cholesterol and systolic blood pressure, also between triglyceride and diastolic blood pressure. The contribution of total cholesterol and LDL to the value of systolic blood pressure is 11,9%.
