Abstract

Due to the defects in composite for high voltage insulator failure caused by dynamic load, it is necessary to optimize the mechanical behavior of the composite insulator. The optimization is done by improving the composite production. There are some methods to produce composites for high voltage insulator. The VARI is the method that was used in this research. By using VARI method the effects of fouling can be reduced compared to non-vacuum method (hand lay-up). The mechanical properties such as tensile strength and bending value were investigated by using tensile and bending test. As the results the maximum tensile stress by VARI method was 352,1720 Mpa while tensile stress from hand lay-up was 287,8736 Mpa. After fracture by tensile test specimens of VARI method, the fibers bonded with a matrix still in a good condition, while by hand lay-up method the fiber dispersed out of the matrix that reduces the mechanical strength of the composite.
