Correlation Between Smoking Activity and Incidence of Uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Puskesmas Sakra, East Lombok

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia). There is about 90-95% of patients suffering from type 2 DM. Type 2 DM has many risk factors, one of them is smoking. East Lombok is the highest prevalence region in Lombok Island with 13.073 patients predicted. Sakra subdistrict especially has the highest type 2 DM prevalence with 625 patients in 2019. East Lombok also has 25,79% active smokers above the age of 10. This research aimed to determine the relationship between smoking activity and the incidence of uncontrolled type 2 DM in Puskesmas Sakra, East Lombok. This research used cross-sectional study design with 60 respondents chosen with consecutive sampling method. Secondary data obtained from medical records and primary data obtained from direct interview. Data were analyzed using Chi-Square and Fisher Exact test. The result showed that 93.3% of respondents has uncontrolled type 2 DM and 80% of respondents are non-active smokers. Chi-Square test showed that P-value 0.195 (p > 0.05) which means there is no relationship between smoking activity and the incidence of uncontrolled type 2 DM in Puskesmas Sakra, East Lombok. There is no relationship between smoking activity and the incidence of uncontrolled type 2 DM in Puskesmas Sakra, East Lombok.
